Top seeds sail through; Bajaj, Verma bow out at LG All-India Amateur Pune, Feb 16: While most of the top seeds made it through to the next round, top-ranked players, Rahul Bajaj and Gagan Verma were shown the door in the second round of the matchplay championship at the LG All-India Amateur which is being played at the par-72 Oxford Golf & Country Club. Eighth seed Kanishk Madan accounted for Gagan, winning the tie 2&1 while Banalore’s Udayan Mane took out Bajaj, the highest ranked player in the field this week.
Second seed Abhijit Chadha, winner of the LG Gujarat Open earlier this season, was also made to pack his bags as another Bangalore boy—CG Somiah—came through against him 2&1. But while there were some upsets, most of the remaining top seeds made it to the round of 16, including top seed Chikkarangappa. Chikka, who played Kapurthala’s Imamul Haque today, faced a little more resistance than his first-round match, but still completed the tie on the 16th hole, winning 3&2.
Speaking after the round, Chikka said, “It wasn’t a great match for me. I was not playing as well as I did in the first round and he was playing some really solid golf. I will have to be more focussed and tomorrow is going to be a tough day because of two matches.
Also through to the next round are the Sri Lankans—Mithun Perera and K Prabhagarn. While Mithun brought to an end local lad Aditya Bhanadarkar’s campaign at the All-India, Prabhagaran defeated Ajay Singh. Both players will face off against each other in the next match. After the round, Perera said, “I am playing well and I made some good putts today otherwise the match would have gone the distance. It is unfortunate that the draw is like this and I will have to play Prabha in the next round but I guess that is the way it goes.”
Local lad Moin Malak won a close match against Pawan Kumar where the tie was decided on the 19th hole after both players finished the regulation 18 holes All-square.
In the bottom half of the draw, Delhi’s Karan Vasudeva dominated his tie against Varoon Parmar and will face the experienced Simarjeet Singh, who too registered a comfortable win. Abhinav Lohan will play Darshan Veeraraghavan who has won two good ties to get to the pre-quarters. Players will play the pre-quarters and the quarter-finals tomorrow before the Semi-finals on Thursday.
